DitStorm™ Decoder
First a Dream, then a Goal, then a Reality!
They said it could not be done! No mere computer could match any good Morse Ace!
They were wrong. Introducing DitStorm™ by K5WVA!
Morse Nexus (formerly PreppComm) introduced its revolutionary decoding technology in 2021, achieving what was previously thought impossible: reliable Morse code interpretation in high-noise environments, even when operating below the noise floor. While existing decoders consistently failed under such conditions, ours demonstrated remarkable resilience. Still, both our early system and others on the market struggled with other common real-world challenges—signal fading, inconsistent keying styles, and noise and interference.
The underlying issue stems from the fact that conventional decoders rely on rigid timing definitions of Morse code originally designed for landline telegraphy—not the unstable nature of over-the-air transmissions. Once variables like noise, fading, and irregular pacing enter the equation, traditional algorithms fall short. DitStorm™ was created to solve this gap, offering decoding intelligence that adapts like a human operator.
We set out to turn that dream into reality—to build a decoder from the ground up using a fundamentally new approach. In 2024, partnering with Joe Bobier, K5WVA, we defined our mission: to engineer a truly superior decoding technology. Our initial specifications were uncompromising: real-time decoding with zero lag, seamless adaptation to code speed changes, compatibility with all keying styles (including highly irregular "sloppy" fist), resilience against deep fades and extreme noise, and full support for specialized modes like Farnsworth.
Months of intensive development and rigorous on-air testing followed. We pushed the system against some of the most challenging signals imaginable, iterating repeatedly—at times starting over entirely—to ensure robustness under real-world conditions.
Relativistic Context Decoding
The outcome is DitStorm™—a Relativistic Forward-Looking Context Window decoder. Unlike our earlier AI-assisted models, which required data collection before analysis could begin, DitStorm™ starts decoding instantaneously. It abandons the rigid timebase definitions of traditional Morse, operating instead much like the human brain: dynamically identifying marks and spaces by relational context. On rare occasions, the initial character or two may be misinterpreted, but DitStorm's Machine Learning OverMind continuously audits and corrects the output in real-time, ensuring accuracy builds rapidly as context solidifies.
Speed adaptation is instantaneous—tune to a new signal, and DitStorm™ locks on immediately. This is critical for contesting and DX chasing, where every second counts. There are no manual speed settings to adjust, no knobs to turn. Just fast, clean decoding, even as signals dip into the noise or appear to vanish entirely.
Different operators, different fists, different keys—none of it matters. Sloppy keying is effortlessly parsed, and variations introduced by straight keys, bugs, or paddles are handled without issue. The system recognizes patterns, not rigid timing, making it fundamentally agnostic to the source. Even Farnsworth spacing is decoded with precision (words rather than individual letters).
Text Formatting - Upper/Lower case, color, bold, blinking text, and emoji's between Cypher stations!
5 to 80 WPM encoding and decoding - depending on the capabilities of your transceiver, and of course, band conditions
Powerful built-in visible BPF: This filter is so powerful, when turned all the way up, only 5 WPM can get through. At lower settings, 80 WPM can get through. Adds to your transceiver BPF and notch filter for amazing noise reduction.
That’s the core innovation behind DitStorm™: a decoding engine that thinks like a Morse Expert.
Welcome to the future of CW.

Cypher™ Universal Morse Expert
The revolutionary DitStorm™ technology* represents a quantum leap in Morse code encoding and decoding. This machine-learning-powered system delivers performance once thought impossible, and we've condensed it into an ultra-portable unit under 6 cubic inches. Carry expert decoding capability in your pocket and connect it to any transceiver. It also integrates with our transceivers for a seamless operator experience.
Operate Anywhere, On Any Screen.
The Cypher™ is uniquely versatile. It hosts its own internal web server, delivering its full graphical interface directly to a Chrome browser on your PC, Mac, phone, or tablet. Use it as a base station with a large desktop monitor over Wi-Fi, or take it to the field with a phone and optional Bluetooth keyboard—no internet required. Or combine it with our portable folding Bluetooth keyboard/stand for easy setup and operation. All AI/ML processing is self-contained within the unit.
Distributed Processing for Peak Performance.
The Cypher intelligently leverages a distributed processing model. Its built-in 240 MHz dual-core processor teams up with the substantial multi-core horsepower of your host device (computer, phone, or tablet). This partnership dedicates maximum resources to the machine learning algorithms, ensuring flawless, real-time decoding and auto-correct under the most demanding conditions.
Complete Operating System with Intelligent Automation.
Beyond decoding, the Cypher is a full-featured operating companion. It includes:
-
Complete Hands-off Station Log: All transmissions and QSO's recorded, with call signs, time of day. Reduces stress and eliminates a lot of busywork.
-
RPL (Rig Programming Language): Create powerful macros and automate station functions.
-
Automatic Call Sign Capture: Logs over-the-air call signs for automatic station identification.
-
Adaptive Transmitter Speed: Automatically matches contacts speed, capped by your desired typing or keying speed
-
Tone Translator: enables operator to hear all code at 600 Hz, no matter what the actual pitch of the code may be.
Three Powerful Operating Modes:
1 Direct Mode: Connects directly to your transceiver's key-in and headphone jacks. Manually tune your VFO to position the desired signal onto the Cypher's fixed decode tone (selectable from 600 Hz standard to 1300 Hz for PreppComm transceivers). Enjoy the same decoding power and an optional 600 Hz audio tone from the tone translator for comfortable listening.
2 Float Mode: In this case, the powerful band pass filter (BPF) can float anywhere on the audio scope you see a CW signal. Simply touch or click on the signal to bring the decoder BPF to that frequency, so you can listen in on the signal. Because you are now floating away from the fixed 600 Hz or 1300 Hz offset built into your transceiver, transmitting is disabled.
3. Loop-Back Mode: This mode enables you to experiment with the built-in encoder feeding back directly to the decoder. It allows you to learn the system without actually going on the air.
Seamless Logging and Operation.
All session activity—decoded and encoded text, timestamps, and call signs—is displayed on the GUI and saved to non-volatile memory. Logs can be edited later, and are provided with GMT or local timestamps. With DitStorm's instant decoding, tuning the bands and grabbing DX or contest stations is faster and easier than ever. No manual logging required.
